Thelma Rose became a Coca Cola model in magazines and later a silent film star.

Egg Juggling and the history of corn mazes

Egg Juggling
Originally uploaded by tolkien4me

Bertha Jean had to supplement her egg juggling routine with advertising. Her mama made the rooster costume and so she would juggle every day hoping someone would buy her eggs.

One night, Bertha Jean saw bright lights over the barn and the next morning, strange patterns in the cornfield astounded her.
She told the local newspaper that you could get lost in that cornfield with all those weird patterns... it was like a maze. People started coming to see the maze and she was able to charge insane prices for people to get lost.

Thereafter, Bertha Jean only wore the rooster costume and juggled for children who came on school buses to see the crop patterns.

4th of July Petite Doll Challenge

Hi everyone,

I spent a lovely day with a new friend from my my journaling/bible study class.  We went to a local park to a "sketch in the park" hosted by the local arts council.  I've never sketched from nature before and one of the local artists in charge came up and said he liked my work!! Crazy, because I had no idea what I was doing...
but the weather was actually bearable today. In the 80's and low humidity for a change.  Just the way summer should be!  Then, we went to Joann's looking around, went to eat lunch, hung out at the bookstore and went to a matinee.
Anyway, Suzi Blu, my favorite art instructor in the UNIVERSE, said to make a July 4th doll for the weekend, so here she is.  You MUST go to check out her classes (here). Suzi has given me confidence to call myself an ARTIST!!! YAY

Don't feel guilty!!

This is the biggest obstacle I've had to overcome in the last year and a half. I was made to feel guilty for 19 years about anything I did that did not have a monetary value i.e. my art or reading or anything fun...

If you have a creative spirit, then you NEED to paint, sew, write or whatever. God puts that creative desire in our hearts and it's part of our makeup. Yeah, you may feel that you're not the best artist in the world and you draw crooked eyes or you have to rip out seams on a dress a few times but you still HAVE to spend time creating. I feel empty and stressed unless I take a little time to create every week.

I don't mean, spend so much time that you don't go to work or feed your kids, but take time for yourself. It's like my devotion time. Give God the glory for giving you talent and desire to make something beautiful.
This is one of my first weeks practice sketches for Petite Art Dolls with Suzi Blu. Yeah, I'm not the world's greatest but LOVE doing this. YAY

My first Art Journal

I'm SO EXCITED!!! I made a few pages of my first art journal. I followed some of the steps from Teesha Moore, the queen of journaling and zettiology. I had so much fun. I got a cheepie 140lb press watercolor booklet from Hobby Lobby 8.5x5.5 and used watercolors as the base on each page. I did 10 pages as Teesha recommends and then sat up til 2am on Saturday cutting out pictures, drawing etc. I normally go to bed at 10pm so this was crazy!! I've only journaled on a couple pages so far. Can't wait to do more.

PLUS I just joined Suzi Blu's Academy. YAY!! I don't know how I found her. I think a link from someone's website. I saw a couple of her videos and fell in love. She's hysterical wearing her pink wigs and I love the way she talks. She has a great personality, and is so talented. She builds confidence in people and thats what I need. I always say "I'm not a real artist" blah blah. I've signed up for the beginner class "Petit art dolls" so I can learn the basics of the style and plan on taking all her classes.

Anyway, here's a couple pics from my journal. I posted all of them on Flickr

I'm back

Ok, it's been a LONG time since I posted anything. I've been creative (off and on) but forgot about the blog. Here's a card I made for my sweet regional manager. She surprised me this weekend with a lovely card and gift. Since we work for AFLAC, the duck image inspired me. The image is from Land of Nod Studios.

Also, I made a digital collage a couple of weeks ago since there is an Alice craze right now. It's always been a favorite of mine so I'm glad people are reading Alice in Wonderland again. The images are from vintage images, Sherrie Drummond, and Ilene Alexeeva.
